Scientists fear global warming could bring longer, more expensive wildfire seasons
Floods caused by torrential rain killed more than 23 people and displaced thousands
Fire and floods, freezing and frying, our fragile Earth holds us captive to its whims.
California blazes, Somalia drowns, Albertans gird their frigid loins and Australians buy more SPF 25. But that is only part of what causes me to wonder.
Scientists state that Global Warming is going to drown us if we don’t do something! Others say we’re all going to burn.
The guy on the midwest farm worries that there’s not enough well water for his cattle while back east the fields are rotting in six inches of rain. This is what bothers me.
I read the news and shake my head at the injustice of it all but George having to sell his cattle to feed his family worries me.
I know George. He’s a neighbor, we have coffee together and talk about life. We talk about his daughter in college and whether she’ll have to quit school due to lack of money. We talk about him having to get a second job to keep the family farm his grandfather started. These are things I can feel, I can get a handle on and understand.
23 die in Somalia and thousands are left homeless, I can feel for them but I can’t do anything. I can’t be there for them like I can for George.
Life is local. It affects us directly. We may feel the effects of global situations but we, individuals, can’t be there for everyone. BUT, we, individuals, can hug the grieving neighbor. We, individuals, can listen to the pain of our friends without judgement.
We, individuals, can make an individual difference to one individual at a time.
